Job Scope of Full-Time Library Assistant (Clementi, West Zone)
The full-time Library Assistant shall fulfill the following duties:
Operational:
(a) Ensure that the day-to-day operation and administration of the school MRL is efficient and that the system, resources and equipment are well maintained.
(b) Implement library policies and procedures for library operation and management e.g. loan, collection development (in consultation with the teacher-librarians), condemnation and preservation policies for all library equipment and resources (in consultation with the school to ensure that all MOE regulations are adhered to).
(c) Prepare monthly administrative report on library usage, loan statistics, reference enquiries and library activities / programmes.
(d) Operate the functionalities of the Library Automation System (LAS) such as charging, renewing and returning, circulation, generation of reports and OPAC Web enquiry. Update and maintain accuracy of data in the LAS, e.g. patron information and status, location of library collection.
Collection Maintenance:
(a) Shelve library collections according to the Dewey Decimal Classification.
(b) Catalogue and accession new library materials into the LAS
(c) File and maintain print media resources based on school needs.
(d) Provide at least 5 thematic displays per year.
(e) Weed school MRL resources to ensure currency, relevance and optimum use of the shelf space (in consultation with the representative from the various subject heads of departments).
Reference & Advisory:
Provide loan and information services to pupils and teachers:
- Assist walk-in users as well as queries made through telephone calls or emails
- Assist in locating sources of information from print and non-print resources
Programme:
(a) Assist in conducting user education programmes such as library orientation programme (including tours) for new pupils and teachers
(b) Assist teachers in conducting activities, workshops, camps etc. for pupil librarians
(c) Assist in Library Programmes/Activities at the school and/ Inter-school levels.
(d) Publicise library collection, services and activities through library displays, newsletters and online broadcast system
Housekeeping:
(a) Define collection and other functional areas with clear layout, directional and informative signage and guides
(b) Carry out shelf checking or shelf reading and generate collection statistical report from the LAS.
Working Hours:
Mon – Fri : 7.30 am to 5.00 pm (including 1 hour lunch)
Preferably able to start work on 27 September 2010.
Qualifications of Applicant:
· At least 3 N level passes including EL
Applicant with the following experience and knowledge will be preferred:
· School’s library operations
· Dewey Decimal Classification system (including shelving)
· Basic customer service
Training will be provided to equip the library staff with Library Automation System
