The full-time Library Assistant shall fulfill the following duties:
Operational:
(a) Ensure that the day-to-day operation and administration of the school’s Media Resource Library (including the Teachers’ Resource Room) is efficient and that the system, resources and equipment are well maintained.
(b) Implement library policies and procedures for library operation and management e.g. loan, collection development (in consultation with the teacher-librarians), condemnation and preservation policies for all library equipment and resources (in consultation with the school to ensure that all MOE regulations are adhered to).
(c) Prepare monthly administrative reports on library usage, loan statistics, reference enquiries and library activities / programmes.
(d) Operate the functionalities of the Library Automation System (LAS) such as charging, renewing and returning, circulation, generation of reports and OPAC Web enquiry. Update and maintain accuracy of data in the LAS, e.g. patron information and status, location of library collection.
(e) Conduct required condemnation and stock-taking of material.
(f) Monitor overdue / lost books and handle the collection of payment.
(g) Create an attractive and conducive environment for reading and learning (e.g. physical layout, sticking up of students’ work, posters).
Collection Maintenance:
(a) Co-ordinate with the Library Service Provider (in this case, Civica Pte Ltd) in the procurement, selection and delivery of MRL print and non-print materials.
(b) Shelve library collections according to the Dewey Decimal Classification.
(c) File and maintain print media resources based on school needs.
(d) Provide 1 new thematic display approx. every 5 weeks (twice a term).
(e) Weed school MRL resources to ensure currency, relevance and optimum usage of shelf space (in consultation with the representative from the various subject heads of departments).
(f) Maintain the Teachers’ Resource Room and monitor usage of the teachers’ reference books and multimedia material.
Reference & Advisory:
(a) Provide loan and information services to pupils and teachers:
i.Assist walk-in users as well as queries made through telephone calls or emails
ii.Assist in locating sources of information from print and non-print resources
Programmes:
(a) Conduct library orientation programmes (tours / PowerPoint presentations) for new pupils and teachers.
(b) Assist in Library Programmes / Activities at the school and Inter-school levels.
(c) Work with parent volunteers in managing student librarians and various programmes (e.g. Reading Moms)
Housekeeping:
(a) Define collection and other functional areas with clear layout, directional and informative signage and guides.
(b) Carry out shelf checking or shelf reading and generate collection statistical report from the LAS.
Working with a given budget to purchase stationary and book display material.

- Leader – Work with a given budget / parent volunteers to craft programmes and acquire relevant material
- Disciplinarian - Be able to control large groups of children / maintain discipline in the library
- Orator - Be confident enough to give presentations to new teachers / students
- Independent worker - Have initiative and be able to work independently
- Trouble-shooter - Be able to troubleshoot and remedy operational / day-to-day problems
- Creative thinker – Craft and run library programmes (e.g. Roald Dahl Day) / create thematic displays (e.g. Olympics Month)
- Committed – Be responsible and committed to the job
- IT-Savvy – Be able to guide students in using the self-access PCs for online research / OPAC searches
- Willingness to learn – Be able to link up with and support the English department in its programmes and initiatives (e.g. Reading Tree / Reading Card / Readers’ Theatre)
Job Specifications:
- Female, Mandarin-speaking
- Minimum GCE ‘O’ Level
- Monthly salary: $1400
- Working hours: 7.45am to 4.45pm daily (with half-an-hour lunch break)
- 14 days annual leave (to be taken during school holidays and off days)
